A corporate brand is the sum total of several ideas. It encompasses your organization’s philosophy, culture, and approach to business as well as its reputation among its customers. A brand is reflected not just by the belief system of the top management but by each and every cog in the establishment’s wheel. For people who like to see the world in boxes, Human Resource Managers are merely tools for ensuring a good flow of talent into the company, and have little bearing on the brand.

However, a closer look at the interconnected aspects of branding will prove that Human Resource Managers are key to the organization’s branding. They not only ensure compliance with labor laws and employment ethics, but also make sure that people in the organization are in sync with the brand image and value of the establishment and also reflect it externally.

A brand is the identity of a company in the eyes of its customers. To put it more precisely, it’s the promise that customers associate with the experience, value and quality of the services extended by the organization. If the promise is not delivered to the customers each and every time, the brand image suffers.

Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Group, famously said that organizations should look after their employees, who in turn will automatically look after the customers and maintain the brand value. This is why the role of Human Resource Managers is important and key to the brand image. By being the vanguard of an organization’s culture, by moulding the environment of the organization, by instilling the right values in new employees and bringing them in sync with the organization’s core values and beliefs, HR professionals determine the continuity of the organization’s brand at every level. In this manner, they also act as brand ambassadors of the company they represent. More precisely, they ensure that each employee becomes a brand ambassador of the organization.

Competitive pressure in today’s business environment has catapulted the HR department from an administrative overhead to the fountainhead of innovative solutions to cultivate and nurture talent, and act as the conduit between the top management and the ground level executers. This is how the core philosophy of brand flows from top to bottom internally.

Learning about the standards and trends prevalent in the industry is the key HR solutions provider as it helps organizations keep pace with the changing needs of time. For example, companies today are adopting employee friendly measures such as flexible timings, work from home options, paternity leaves and longer paid maternity leaves to make working more amenable and happy experience for employees. Organizations that take lead in adopting such friendly measures will automatically rank higher on employee preference and will have better retention results.

Happy employee translates into the most suitable brand ambassador of an organization as he/she act as an influencer in the industry and persuades more talented individuals to join the organization. Today, HR managers need to think like marketers and know how to market USPs of their organization to potential talent.

Their role is crucial in explaining their company’s work culture and benefits to prospective candidates. It’s also crucial in retaining experienced candidates as they seek job security. Hence, the importance of retention, particularly of quality talent is key to maintaining the organization’s brand value.

Mr Rohit Aggarwal, CEO Koenig Solutions
Importance of Skill based training for securing

Authored Article by Mr Rohit Aggarwal, CEO Koenig Solutions

You might have been a brilliant student, with stupendous knowledge of the subjects you studied, but will it be sufficient to land you your dream job? It might not be, in the dynamically changing times of today.

What do employers look for while recruiting fresh pass-outs in their ranks? They do not just look for IQ and qualification, but they also look for the skill set you bring to the table. Even if you are a graduate in a professional course such as engineering, architecture, or law, what would make a drastic difference to your employability is your added capabilities in the skills that are being practiced in the industry. For example, a software engineering with sound knowledge of a programming language that was used 10 years back will not cut the ice in the recruitment market; an architect who is not equipped to work on the latest CAD software might find it difficult to cope with the demands of the employers. Today, employers do not have the patience to recruit and provide costly skill-training to employees. This is why good students find themselves at sea when they step out into the job market. They may eventually land up with jobs, but not necessarily their dream job. They might be paid abysmally low as recruiters then upskill them.

A National Employability Report by Aspiring Minds in 2013 concluded that a whopping 47% of graduates in India were unemployable in any sector of the knowledge economy. This clearly indicates that colleges and educational institutions in India which provide degrees are perhaps lacking in their approach to make their students employment ready. So, what can students do to make sure they do not land in the ‘dubious 47 % bracket’?

The key is to keep a track on market trends and equip yourself with skills that will make a difference. Not to be underestimated are soft skills such as communication, persuasiveness, and congeniality. These come especially handy when you are looking for a job in consumer facing industries such as hospitality, PR or marketing.

A wide range of organizations today look for bright graduates to man entry-level positions. Be it sales departments, business process outsourcing units, event management agencies, research analysts, finance sector companies, hospitality sector or back office departments – a large field is open for fresher’s seeking an entry into work life.

However, recruiters often turn up disappointed by the quality of applicants and interviewees. While some lack communication skills, others are not computer savvy in this age of technology. Yet others are not capable of analyzing basic facts and figures; and most incapable of putting their theoretical rote learning into application. Even writing emails appears to be a challenging task for some graduates.

Let’s take a look at the skills that add to your employability:

IT Training: Not just for students of software programming, IT training can make a huge difference to students of multiple fields. Latest IT technology and softwares are today being used to bring revolutionary changes to different fields. Architectural firms, for example, are rapidly junking the pen and paper design method, and turning to latest Computer Aided Design (CAD) softwares for design. Similarly, if you are working in the field of advertising or film making, it may help if you know one bit or two of animation, even if you are in the creative and conceptualization domain. A large number of engineering colleges teach outdated languages to students. One reason for this is the fact that better programming languages and softwares very rapidly update the market, leaving little time to academics to cope. For programmers therefore, it is very essential to keep a tab on the latest developments in the market and learn the skills from external sources if needed.

Basic computer literacy is also must today. Being computer literate means that you are able to work effectively on basic MS Office operations; update Excel Sheets, and prepare Power Point Presentations. An added skill set in graphics and video editing can make you more useful in some fields. In an increasingly social media centric world, the more you will be able to prove yourself beneficial to your employer.

Communication skills: Imagine a good communicator against a person who struggles to put thoughts into words. The latter would certainly find it difficult to land a good job. A confident demeanor, an ability to put thoughts into words, good verbal and written communication, and ability to convincingly deliver presentations can make much difference to your employability. However, not all people are born with the gift of the gab, as they say. For those who are introverts, it helps if they open up on multiple platforms in early life. Being part of extra-curricular activities, on stage appearances as well as joining literary and creative writing groups during college can help you improve on your communication skills. At the same time if you find yourself lacking in this area, it may help to join a brief professional crash course on improving communication skills.

General Awareness: No matter how much you know your subject, not being aware of what is happening around in the world can put a major dent on your employability. Recruiters today want candidates who have good IQ levels, and effective general awareness, no matter which sector. As simple a habit as reading a newspaper daily can make a huge difference to your skills and employability.

The Auto Sector Witnessed an Average 6 Per Cent Growth in Employment Opportunities in February 2015, Reports TimesJobs Data

The 'Make in India' campaign has revived the hiring sentiments in the Indian manufacturing sector. With experts predicting India as the third-largest auto manufacturer in the world by 2020, the automotive and auto component industries are set to see accelerated growth in workforce demand and hiring as well. Preparing for this boost, the year-on-year analysis of TimesJobs data, between Feb 2014 and Feb 2015, shows a significant 6 per cent increase in demand for talent for the auto sector.

Demand across functions

To sustain increase in production, the auto sector is witnessing a growth in demand for talent in engineering, quality assurance, technology, logistics, operations and product development domains.

R&D being a core competitive advantage, demand is high for design and AutoCAD engineers, prototype ers, developers, and testing engineers. With key focus on quality assurance and control in product design and production, automakers have increased hiring for QA and QC professionals as well.

"As the war for bigger market share intensifies among automobile companies, demand for R&D, quality assurance professionals and design engineers will accelerate in 2015. Since most of the R&D work is happening in Indian engineering centres, for domestic as well as global automobile players, demand for engineers and production management professionals will also see a boost," says Vivek Madhukar, COO, TimesJobs.com.

National and International demand

With lower oil prices and increasing consumer purchasing power, the auto sector is focusing on building talent capabilities in the manufacturing hubs of Delhi-NCR, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai and Indore, reports TimesJobs.

In a state-wise analysis, Maharashtra (excluding Mumbai and Pune) still tops the recruitment chart as companies build strength in their R&D and engineering centres in the state.

Demand for talent willing to relocate overseas has also witnessed a significant rise as international markets in Africa, Middle East and South East Asia are seeing Indian companies enter in expansion mode.

Markets in the Middle East and South Africa have made a significant contribution in raising demand for professionals in the engineering and supply chain management functions, reports TimesJobs data.

Hiring outlook

According to TimesJobs.com data, demand for HR specialists in employee engagement and retention domain will also see a significant rise as companies face acute talent crunch and attrition, especially at the middle level.

Experts believe Punjab, Indore and Bengaluru to be the emerging hiring hotspots for 2015. Demand for sales specialists with expertise in new and used vehicles is also expected to rise.
